Bryant was born Vanessa Urbieta Cornejo on May 5, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, to Sofia Urbieta who immigrated from Mexico.[1][2] Her parents divorced when she was a baby and her biological father moved to Mexico;[1] she is estranged from her father.[3] Her mother was a shipping clerk at an electronics company who in 1990, married Stephen Laine, a middle manager at the same company.
