Mary Kingsley was a British traveler and writer, known for her exploration of Africa.
She gained fame as the first woman to travel alone in Africa. She was born as Mary Henrietta Kingsley in 1862 in Islington, London. She was the eldest daughter of Dr. George Kingsley and his wife Mary Bailey.
